“Just you wait and see, Buckrod,” Jimmi said, hands going to his pockets while Jake took all the strain. “I’m there when the gettin’s gettin’ got!”

Whitson shook his head but said nothing as he and Lord Grant made their way to the ship’s bow.

“Why,” Lord Grant whispered when they reached the rail, “did Grimble sail south around the island and avoid this shorter northern way?”

“Because,” Whitson whispered hoarsely as he gazed ahead, “this way is full of tricky twists, foaming surf, tide pools, shallow passages, and rocks. Rocks all through.”

“Like the one that tore us to shreds?”

“Bigger. And harder to see.”

“And it’s the only way?”

“It’s the only way to Lillie.”

Lord Grant nodded gravely. “Then let all be a hopeless hazard, and I will ride through it with you.”
